Rajab is the first month in the season of worship foreshadowing Ramadan where the worship of fasting occurs and then the months of hajj i.e. pilgrimage to Mecca. For that reason Imam Abu Bakr al-Warraq al-Balkhi said “In the month of Rajab you sow the seeds, in Sha`ban you irrigate them and in Ramadan you reap the harvest.” He also said: “Rajab is like a wind, Sha`ban is like a cloud and Ramadan is like rain.” A Muslim should be careful about what he is planting as to be certain that he will gain the fruit. The prophet(Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) used to say “O Allah bless us in Rajab and Sha`ban and enable us to reach Ramadan”
- Rajab is most likely the month in which the Israa’ (Night Journey) and the Mi`raj (Ascension to the 7th Heaven) took place on the 27th night of Rajab as most of the scholars agreed. This was the night on which the Messenger of Allah (Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him) met his Lord and received the greatest ennoblement that a created being ever received from Allah.
- Performing ‘Umrah in the month of Rajab is desirable.
Some of the Companions, among them are `Umar ibn al-Khatab, his son `Abdullah, and `A’ishah, the prophet’s wife liked to make `Umrah in Rajab. Ibn Sireen also narrated that many of the early Muslims used to make ‘Umra during Rajab.
Eventually, Rajab is not only a month of goodness but it is an opportunity to motivate yourself and get it prepared for the goodness of the month of Ramadan.
