Official Condemnation and Urgent Investigation Following Islamophobic Chants During Egypt–Spain Match

The racist chants that took place at RCDE Stadium during the international friendly football match between Spain and Egypt have sparked widespread public outrage and official reactions, after some fans chanted offensive Islamophobic and xenophobic slogans and jeered during the Egyptian national anthem.

Several members of the Spanish government strongly condemned these actions. Minister of Education Milagros Tolón emphasized that sport is founded on values of respect and coexistence, stressing that “racism and hatred have no place in stadiums and in society.” Meanwhile, Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños described the incident as “a disgrace to society,” warning against the growing influence of far-right rhetoric.

In the same context, Spain's coach Luis de la Fuente expressed his “absolute rejection” of the chants. He told reporters that the racist behaviour of fans was intolerable and called for the removal of “violent elements” from the stands. Moreover, The Royal Spanish Football Federation also underscored the need to adopt strict measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, which undermine the image of Spanish sport.

The Catalan police launched an official investigation into the incident after the chants were repeated on more than one occasion during the match, despite stadium authorities issuing repeated warnings over loudspeakers emphasizing that racist behavior constitutes a criminal offense.

The incident comes at a time when Spain is preparing to host the 2030 FIFA World Cup in partnership with countries with Muslim-majority populations, raising questions about the ability of stadium environments to accommodate cultural diversity. Observers believe that the incident does not merely reflect isolated misconduct, but rather points to deeper challenges related to the rise of hate speech, highlighting the urgent need for decisive action to safeguard the values of coexistence and mutual respect both inside and outside stadiums.

In response to these racist violations, the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism hails the firm stance taken by the Spanish government and the sports sector in condemning these chants, emphasizing that such a response reflects a genuine commitment to the principles of justice and respect for religious and cultural diversity.

The Observatory further stresses that confronting hate speech—particularly in sports stadiums—has become an urgent necessity to protect social cohesion and promote a culture of coexistence and mutual respect within societies.
