In collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) has successfully conducted a high-impact symposium for Cairo University students. The event is a key pillar of the national initiative, “Towards a Youth-Oriented Vision for Combating Extremism,” designed to fortify the intellectual security of Egyptian youth and develop their life skills to face challenges.
AOCE’s Executive Director, Dr. Reham Salama, inaugurated the program by emphasizing that the university is not merely a place of learning, but it serves as a 'second home' where awareness is cultivated and the future of the nation is shaped
During the intensive sessions, AOCE researchers provided a detailed overview of the Observatory's operational framework, which spans 13 specialized units. The discussion focused on the technical and ethical dimensions of deconstructing extremist discourse. They underscored the need to develop an effective discourse that reinforces the values of citizenship, accepting others, and integration to refute extremist allegations. In addition, they warned against attempts of ideological invasion aimed at eroding national identity among young people, emphasizing the importance of social balance and adherence to ethical human conduct as cornerstones for achieving stability within society.
Further, Major Ahmed Karkeet, leadership and self-development consultant, delivered a lecture centered on the concept of the "Accountable Person." He argued that individual responsibility is the first line of defense against radicalization. He pointed to the importance of developing critical thinking as a key tool for deconstructing misconceptions and enhancing students' leadership skills through practical strategies for developing communication skills and social intelligence and enabling them to face intellectual challenges.
The event concluded with an interactive dialogue session, providing participants with an opportunity to present their own perspectives and proposals regarding emerging social challenges. This initiative aims to ensure that youth are an integral and active part of formulating solutions, thus serving the state's strategy of building a conscious Egyptian identity and supporting the path of sustainable development.
