Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) continues its “Pillars of Awareness” initiative, aimed at enhancing critical thinking skills among youth. During the workshops, The AOCE researchers gave an overview of AOCE and addressed various critical intellectual issues. The following are the key issues discussed during the three-day program:
- Critical Thinking: Distinguishing Fact from Assumption
The researchers provided a conceptual framework for critical thinking, effectively deconstructing the frequent overlap among personal opinions, scientific facts, and preconceived notions.
- Mechanisms for Countering Logical Fallacies
AOCE researchers illustrated digital manipulation tools, presenting methods for detecting fallacies and intellectual tricks used by extremist groups to mislead public opinion. In addition, participants had the chance to analyze widely circulated news texts and videos, equipping them with real-world analysis skills.
- Cognitive Bias and Shaping an Objective Perspective
AOCE researchers discussed the tendency of human thought to fall prey to "confirmation bias," the automatic tendency to adopt what aligns with our existing views and disregard what contradicts them, and its impact on the objectivity of judgments and the evaluation of issues and others.
- Deconstructing Zionist Ideology and the Dimensions of the Palestinian Cause
AOCE researchers presented a historical and in-depth analytical overview of the Palestinian cause, highlighting the danger of the Zionist movement as a colonial political movement cloaked in religious garb.
- Atheism: Intellectual Roots and Mechanisms of Confrontation
This lecture reviewed the most prominent transformations that have contributed to the spread of atheistic discourse, particularly through digital platforms and social media, and its reliance on raising doubts and presenting distorted perceptions of religion.
This edition of the "Pillars of Awareness" program is an integral part of AOCE’s awareness-raising role. In addition to its role in monitoring and analyzing extremist groups, The AOCE seeks, through such programs, to build an intellectual "bulwark" among young people and equip them with the methodological tools that make them resistant to recruitment, emphasizing that the battle for awareness is the cornerstone of achieving intellectual security and protecting society.
