Edinburgh Central Mosque Targeted with Offensive Graffiti amid Far-Right Misinformation Campaigns

Edinburgh Central Mosque in Scotland was vandalized with inflammatory messages and offensive drawings, reflecting rising tensions fueled by far-right online misinformation.
Scottish police received a complaint on the morning of Saturday, January 17, about an incident in the Potterrow area of Edinburgh. The perpetrators used the cover of night to scrawl hostile messages telling Muslims to “leave Scotland,” sparking concern within the local Muslim community.
On its part, Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism (AOCE) warns against the dangers of extremist rhetoric propagated by such groups online, highlighting that the spread of extremist rhetoric contributes to the rise of Islamophobia. The AOCE stresses also that targeting mosques is a crime that undermines core human values and threatens social cohesion, calling for law enforcement to protect places of worship and promoting a culture of coexistence.
